Akers has served on many community boards and commissions and is a recent graduate of Leadership Alabama. She is a steering committee member of Mobile United, Envision-Mobile-Baldwin and the state A+Research and Education Foundation. She is currently a finalist in the Leadership for a Changing World program that is a partnership of the Ford Foundation with the Advocacy Institute and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University.
