Redesigning the Media Center
Motivating all students and teachers to improve learning and engage in resource-rich work may require redesigning the architectural layout, light, and color schemes of school library media centers. It means transforming unattractive rooms in old, neglected facilities into bright, inviting spaces that shout, “There’s something new and different going on here!” In newer facilities, it means rethinking the way space is used and creating more comfortable learning-centered work areas. In some buildings refurbishing may even mean turning a cluster of classrooms into multimedia centers, wired for the technology of the twenty-first century. Whatever the need or level of resources, refurbishing ensures that the physical environment specifically meets the learning and information needs of students.
