HEADLINE: L-E middles school nominated for No Child Left Behind honor |

Excitement fills air at Liberty-Eylau Middle School as principal Christy Tidwell walks the halls and explains why the school was recently nominated as a No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School. The Texas Association of Education recently made the recommendation to the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. “Our growth over a three-year period and closing the achievement gap are the reasons we were nominated,” said Tidwell, who is in her fourth year at L-EMS. The education award, one of the most prestigious in the country, distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap, according to department officials. “We are one of 26 schools in the state to be nominated and one of three middle schools in the state to be nominated,” Tidwell said. Once the recommendation is made to the Department of Education, nominees from every state- thousands of schools -submit 13-page application letters. The winners will be chosen this fall.
